The Major Role of the Directorate :
- Grants-in-Aid to the Places of Worship, festivals and organisations of indigenous and tribal faith and culture for its sustainable growth
- To identify, enlist, protect and promote distinct cultural features of various indigenous tribal groups in Assam
- To create a network of indigenous tribal groups for exchange of knowledge, culture and intercommunity practices as well as addressing core social issues and problems affecting specific tribal population groups
- To harness and use traditional knowledge and practices in the areas of health, education, food security and nutrition, natural resource management, bio-diversity conservation, climate change and disaster risk reduction, agriculture and livelihoods and other relevant sectors.
- To encourage academic research and engagement towards promotion and preservation of the indigenous tribal faith and culture.
- To act as an Archival Resource Centre for studies on tribal and ethnic folklore, practices, indigenous sports, indigenous medicines and worship practices by publishing, collating and archiving materials on different tribes of Assam.
- To promote engagement of youth from Indigenous Tribal Communities for addressing issues of their respective communities.
